Incredibly Good Fortune
Today’s Hot News item is on waning soccer stars making a bundle in the Land of Opportunities. More specifically, it is about David Beckham, a soccer player who, by popular consensus, would be categorized as being “near-to-retirement” is able to (thanks to his horde of spin doctors) clinch a deal with the LA Galaxy worth hundreds of millions of dollars and at the same time be proclaimed as the “new kid on the block” with a megastar status. I tried very hard to figure out the rationale for a soccer club wanting to enter into a contract worth that amount of money with an also-ran in a sport which ranks fifth or sixth (or even lower) on the scale of popularity in the United States. Up to this very moment I am still no nearer to the truth than the day on which I first learnt of David’s incredibly good fortune. My conclusion is this:
- If the United States is not a land of opportunity, then I don’t know what is.
- There is no real justice in this world!
